Flights and the airport: new routes, new operator, new terminal
Phu Quoc International Airport has changed operator, gained an airline based on the island and is building a second terminal and runway for APEC. This brief collects the dated items, from the first flight of the new airline in November 2025 to the revised airport plan in October 2026.
Who runs the airport
Airport operation passes from ACV to Sun Airport JSC
2 January 2026. Tuoi Tre News reported that at a ceremony on 1 January 2026 the management, operation and exploitation of Phu Quoc International Airport passed from the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, the state-run operator, to Sun Airport JSC. Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan handed over the operating licence. The ministry asked the new operator to speed up investment in infrastructure, technology and service quality.
The report put traffic in 2025 at about 6 million passengers. A separate report in January gave nearly 5.9 million for 2025 and 4.1 million for 2024, against a design capacity of 4 million a year, which means the airport has been working above capacity since 2024. The report did not disclose the financial terms or the length of the contract.

What this means if you are flying soon
- Until T2 opens, all flights use the existing terminal, which has been working above its design capacity. Allow extra time at peak periods such as January and Tet.
- Building work around the terminal and on the road south of the airport is likely to continue through 2026 and into 2027; see the APEC brief.
- New routes are announced by airlines and change with the seasons. Check the airline's own schedule before you book connections.
- Entry rules depend on your passport and route, not on the airline; see the entry rules brief.
Still unconfirmed
- The date T2 opens to passengers. April 2027 is the stated target; it depends on the technical flight planned for 30 December 2026.
- Daily Kuala Lumpur flights from 1 September 2026, mentioned only in a page teaser.
- The Mumbai, New Delhi and Kaohsiung routes announced for the third quarter of 2026; we found no report of their first flights.
