Ferries and sea transport: crossings, closures and safety
Most visitors fly, but the sea links to Rach Gia and Ha Tien carry passengers, vehicles and supplies, and boat trips around the southern islands are among the most common excursions. This brief follows suspensions, port contracts and safety cases, with the date of each report.
The crossings
Two mainland routes carry most ferry passengers: Rach Gia to Phu Quoc and Ha Tien to Phu Quoc. A further route runs from Lai Son, and boats link Phu Quoc with the Nam Du islands. Most mainland ferries arrive at Bai Vong port on the island's east coast; An Thoi port, at the southern tip, handles cargo, passengers and boats to the southern islands.
A booking site lists two operators on Rach Gia–Phu Quoc, Phu Quoc Express and Superdong, with a crossing of about 2 hours 30 minutes and departures from Rach Gia between 07:10 and 13:10 on the day we checked. Those times come from a reseller, not an operator, and are unconfirmed. Superdong's own website, when we checked it on 25 October 2026, listed other routes but no Phu Quoc timetable. Treat any time on this page as a guide and confirm with the operator before you travel.

Suspensions for weather
All passenger routes to An Giang's islands halted
25 August 2026. DTiNews reported that maritime authorities halted every passenger ferry and boat route to the islands of An Giang province on 25 August because of rough seas, high waves and strong south-west monsoon winds. The Kien Giang Maritime Port Authority named the routes affected as Rach Gia–Nam Du, Lai Son–Phu Quoc, Ha Tien–Phu Quoc and Ha Tien–Tien Hai, suspended in both directions until further notice, with the next day's schedule to be announced later.
Passengers holding deposits or full-price tickets for cancelled sailings could claim a refund or move to the next available crossing. The provincial hydro-meteorological station forecast west to south-west winds of force 4 to 5 at sea, waves of 0.75 to 2 metres, and possible gusts of force 6 to 7 in storms.

Suspensions of this kind follow the monsoon. The island's rainy season runs from about April to November and its dry season from December to March. Travellers who plan to cross by sea between June and September should keep a flight as a fallback and buy tickets that can be refunded or changed.

Two-year operating contract after an auction
7 August 2026. Tuổi Trẻ reported that operating rights for An Thoi port were handed to Mat Troi Ha Long Co., Ltd, which won an auction, at a ceremony in the special zone on 7 August 2026. The contract runs for two years. The facilities include a wharf for ships up to 3,000 DWT, a three-storey passenger terminal, warehouses and yards. The port's stated capacity is 500,000 to 700,000 tonnes of cargo and 360,000 passengers a year.
The port has a troubled record. It was completed in 2012 at a cost of about VND 157.9 billion. The Vietnam Maritime Administration ended one operating contract in January 2021 for violations, and another on 18 February 2024. Officials said the new arrangement should support tourism and the APEC events in 2027.

Criminal case after the July speedboat capsizing
15 September 2026. VnExpress International reported that a speedboat capsized on 11 July 2026 in waters off Hon May Rut Ngoai, in the An Thoi area. Of the 36 people aboard, 21 were rescued and 15 tourists from India died. On 15 September An Giang provincial police opened criminal proceedings against an employee of the tour company, accused of assigning a person without the required qualifications to pilot the boat; the pilot had been taken into custody the day after the accident. The investigation into the cause was continuing.
The report did not mention any new rules for boat trips. We will add them if the special zone or the provincial authorities publish any.

What this means if you are travelling by sea
- Check the weather and the operator's notices the day before and the morning of a crossing, particularly from June to September.
- Keep tickets that can be refunded or exchanged; on 25 August 2026 that was the remedy offered for cancelled sailings.
- For island boat trips from An Thoi, ask who the operator is, whether the boat is registered and whether life jackets are provided and worn. These are questions any passenger can ask; they are not a guarantee.
- If you need help with a problem on a trip, the special zone's response team for tourists, launched in February 2026, handles complaints and emergencies; see the openings brief.
Still unconfirmed
- Current timetables and fares for Rach Gia–Phu Quoc and Ha Tien–Phu Quoc from the operators themselves.
- The completion date for An Thoi International Port.
- Any change to safety rules for small boats after the July 2026 capsizing.
