Phu Quoc news, dated and sourced

Phu Quoc Media reports what changes on Phu Quoc for people who travel there or work with visitors: new air routes and terminal works, ferry suspensions, visa and entry rules, the island's new status as a special zone of An Giang province, and the build-up to APEC. Every item carries the date its source was published and a link to that source.

Latest dated items

The table lists the most recent items across all desks, newest first. The date is the day the source published its report, not the day we wrote about it. Each line links to the brief where the item is explained with its context and source.

The what's on calendar collects dated holidays, milestones and season notes month by month, from November 2026 into 2027. The news index lists every item we have published, in date order.

Three changes from the past year

A new administrative status. Since 1 July 2025 Phu Quoc has been a special zone, an island-level administrative unit under An Giang province. Kien Giang, the province the island used to belong to, was merged into An Giang under a National Assembly resolution of 12 June 2025. Official notices for the island now come from the special zone and from An Giang, whose administrative centre is in the former Rach Gia city.

New hands at the gateways. On 1 January 2026 the operation of Phu Quoc International Airport passed from the state-run Airports Corporation of Vietnam to Sun Airport JSC. On 7 August 2026 the operating rights for An Thoi port went to Mat Troi Ha Long Co., Ltd, after an auction, on a two-year contract. A new airline based on the island, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, flew its first commercial service on 1 November 2025 and opened international routes from March 2026.

A building site for APEC. Phu Quoc is preparing to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in 2027. The Government lists 21 key projects, including a second runway, a new passenger terminal, a conference and exhibition centre, a light rail line and a widened road from the airport to the south. Visitors in 2026 and 2027 should expect construction along that corridor.

Around the island

Three area pages gather the news that affects each part of Phu Quoc, with a short description of the place and links to the briefs.

  • Duong Dong, the west-coast town that serves as the administrative centre, and the story of its night market on Bach Dang street.
  • An Thoi and the south, with the port, the island boat trips, and the APEC conference area at the end of the new road and rail corridor.
  • Ganh Dau and the north, where the national park covers most of the land and the Cua Can reservoir is being built.

How items are dated

Each news item opens with a date in bold. That is the publication date of the source we relied on, or the date of the decision or event when the source states it. Under each block a source line names the source, links to it and shows when an editor last checked it against the page.

We use official sources first: An Giang provincial notices, Government and ministry publications, Vietnamese embassies and consulates, and the operators of the airport and ports. National media come next, with VnExpress International, Tuoi Tre News, Viet Nam News and Voice of Vietnam used most often. Booking sites and encyclopaedias are used only when nothing official answers the question, and the source line says so.

When a date, a timetable or a rule could not be confirmed, the page says that it is unconfirmed. The about page explains the method and keeps the corrections log.

What this site does not do

  • It does not sell tours, rooms, flights, ferry tickets or event tickets, and it takes no bookings.
  • It does not rank or review hotels, restaurants or tour companies. The only businesses named in the news are airlines, ferry lines, airport and port operators, and public bodies, where a fact needs them.
  • It does not publish timetables or fees without a source and a check date.
  • It does not mix advertising with reporting. Advertising spaces are labelled Advertisement; see advertise.

Common questions

Questions readers ask

Is Phu Quoc still part of Kien Giang province?

No. Kien Giang was merged into An Giang province in June 2025, and since 1 July 2025 Phu Quoc has been a special zone of An Giang.

Does Phu Quoc Media sell tours or tickets?

No. It publishes news only and takes no bookings. It does not rank or recommend hotels, restaurants or tour companies.

What does the date in bold mean?

It is the date the source published its report, or the date of the decision when the source gives it. The line under each block shows when an editor last checked the source.

When is APEC on Phu Quoc?

The APEC Economic Leaders' Week is planned for 2027 on Phu Quoc. The sources we checked on 25 October 2026 did not give exact dates, so we list them as unconfirmed.
