About Phu Quoc Media and how we report
Phu Quoc Media is an independent English-language news site about Phu Quoc island. This page explains what it covers, where its facts come from, what the dates mean, what it does not do, how advertising works and how to correct it.
What we cover
The site reports changes that matter to people travelling to Phu Quoc, and to people who live there and work with visitors. Six desks follow flights and the airport, ferries and sea transport, visas and entry rules, APEC preparations, openings and closures, and administration. A calendar collects dated holidays and milestones, and three area pages gather the news for Duong Dong, An Thoi and the south, and Ganh Dau and the north.
The pages are written by the Phu Quoc Media editors, named as the author on every page. We write in English because most of the official information about the island is published in Vietnamese, and many of the people affected by it read English.
What we do not do
- We do not sell tours, rooms, flights, ferry tickets or event tickets, and we take no bookings or commissions.
- We do not rank, rate or review hotels, restaurants, attractions or tour companies.
- We name businesses only when a fact needs them, and then only airlines, ferry lines, and airport and port operators. Every business mentioned is independent of this site.
- We do not publish quotations we have not been able to trace to a published source.
- We do not publish sponsored articles or paid listings.
Where the facts come from
Sources are used in this order of preference:
- Official texts and notices: Government and ministry publications, An Giang provincial notices, the Phu Quoc special zone, and Vietnamese embassies and consulates.
- Statements by the operators of the airport and ports, and by airlines and ferry lines about their own services.
- National news organisations reporting official decisions, such as Viet Nam News, VNA, Voice of Vietnam, Tuoi Tre, VnExpress and Tiền Phong.
- Booking sites and encyclopaedias, only when nothing official answers the question, labelled as such in the source line.
When two sources disagree, for example on the island's area or a project's cost, the page gives both. When a date is a proposal or a developer's target, the page says so. When we cannot confirm something, the brief lists it under Still unconfirmed.
What the dates mean
Each news item opens with a date in bold: the date its source was published, or the date of the decision or event where the source gives it. Under each block, a source line names the source and shows the date an editor last checked it against the page. That date is a record of our work, not a promise that the fact is still true.
Each page also shows when it was first published and when it was last reviewed. Pages are reviewed when a source changes, when a reader reports a problem, and before the Tet and summer peaks, when timetables and rules are most likely to be revised.
Advertising
The site carries display advertising in labelled positions to pay for its upkeep. Advertisers do not see pages before publication and cannot buy a mention, a link or a position in the text. The positions, sizes and rules are on the advertise page. The contact page and legal pages carry no advertising.
What we do badly
- Real-time conditions. We cannot tell you whether a ferry is running today; check the operator.
- Prices set by businesses. They change too quickly for a news site to track, so we do not publish them.
- Local festivals. Official dates are often announced late, and we publish only what we can source.
- Languages other than English.
Corrections
If a page is wrong, out of date or unclear, tell us through the contact page or at info@phuquocmedia.com. Useful reports say which page and sentence, what you found instead, when, and how you know: a link to an official notice, a photo of a sign or a ticket, or what happened at the airport or port on a given day.
An editor reads every report. When a correction is confirmed we change the page, update its review date and the check date of the block concerned, and record significant changes in the log below.
